How I got started in e-Commerce and how it can help you too…

Hey Guys my names Bill,

When I first started in e-commerce I had no idea how to sell products online, let alone make MONEY doing it. But I thought someone out there must have already figured this out, and have a magic software package I could download and start making money within minutes… Right?

So I set off searching for a cool shopping cart.

Guess what I found…

Most e-commerce software SUCKS.

Like me, you’ve probably been frustrated by all the complicated shopping carts that look like something out of 1997 built by a technical computer nerd.

I was disappointed by all the dodgy designs and old technology. They just didn’t have that special online shop “feeling” or any of the web 2.0 features you would expect today.

It’s amazing to me that in an industry worth billions so few people are paying attention to design and innovation of the online shopping experience.

Take a look at modern manufacturing for example, investing huge amounts of time and money into making sure the packaging for a product is just right.

Why?

Because they know something we don’t — that getting the right feel of materials, the right colours and fonts, it all GRABS your attention on the store shelf.

It leaves you wanting to know more about what’s inside.

Your online shop is the same. I discovered completely by accident that page design has a direct impact on the number of sales.

But wait, who cares how the website looks! If the product is good it will sell itself right?

While that may be true for large established online stores, you need to make an extra effort when starting out to get your first few sales.

What I honestly found is, you really have to show customers upfront that your products can offer them a lot of value. And the way you present your website says A LOT about how much you value your products.

Here’s something you can try on your website:

In marketing there is a concept called ‘BRAND’ advertising verses ‘ACTION’ advertising. In other words, do you want to inform your visitors about your product brand name? or do you want them to take action by clicking a link, filling in their credit card details and hitting submit?

If you want to get the kind of consistent success I was looking for, design a website and write content that encourages visitors to take ACTION. Don’t get lost trying to build a brand name in the beginning.

I’ve been in the web design industry for 8 years, and it’s taken me a long time to figure out which design techniques work and which plain don’t.

After joining the e-commerce community recently I found that no-one else had the shopping cart solution I was looking for. Which is why I decided to create a community here to explore new shopping experiences that are about people and not about businesses.

I’d like you to follow along with my own learning process in this blog, I’ll be giving away away my very best secrets and hopefully we can all share and learn together.

Because as someone wise once said…

“The best way to learn is to teach.”

Let me know how you get on with your own shop.
